To feel sorry for, in a condescending way. "You poor poor thing!" It differs from sympathy which means to suffer with, you put yourself in the person's shoes & feel bad for them. Whereas with pity you kind of look down on the person, you don't put yourself in their shoes, you wouldn't lower yourself. "I pity the fool..." (quote from Mr. T, A Team!) No it's not a nice word.

pity is an emotion, usually resulting from an encounter with an unfortunate, injured, or pathetic person ..
yes very bad.
