"Nation" is a socio-cultural-psychological construct. Any nation is a product of histoical, soio-cultural and psycholiogical experiences of the people of that nation, accumulated over a period, which provide some sense of unity among the people of that nation. Therefore, in my opinion, no one person can father a nation.

Navertheless, it is a convention of the historians, or of a society, to name some very prominenet person as a father of a nation, who played an extra-ordinary role in unifying the pepole of that nation. By that convention George Washington is considered, by some historians, as the father of USA -as a nation., and, by the same convention, Mahatma Gandhi is considered a s the father of Indian nation.

But, this convetion, in my opinion, needs critical examination, at least for the following three reasons:

(i) First of all, all nations do not have so called "Fathers".

(ii) Besides, this convention is based on bilological analogy: that a "man" fathers his "son". But, this analogy, when applied to a social entity like "nation", becomes logically fallacious. Because, my contention is that a nation cannot be fathered by only one person. It is, a social produc- having polygenesis.

(iii) Moreover, if this analogy is applied fully to a nation, then the next logical question: is who is the mother of that nation?

This does not mean, of course, that we belittle the role played by Mahatma Gandhi in the formation of Indian nation. He was, indeed one of the greatest human beings, the earth has ever seen. And, he did play literally a "Herculian" role in the formation of Indian nation, as it exists today. Therefore, we can certainly and justly be proud of considering him as the "father" of our nation, by the convention of the hisorians or the society. But, a still better term can be coined. In my opinion, one such tern can be "National Hero" or "Bharat Bhagya Vidhata" !
