People younger/the same age constantly use terms like “hun” and “sweetie” etc.? I mean yeah, I’ll call my girls things like that if I’m joking around. But with people I don’t know well use them, it just bothers me... and quite a bit of the time I feel as though most of the people who use those terms with me are trying to be condescending because they have something against me (not that I always know that... I just get the “feeling” like I said...) or are in someway trying to prove they are above me.
Haha but I’m probably a freak... but to me it’s like, ok I’m not a child, we are both adults...
-oh and don’t get me wrong, I most definitely think some people say things like that will no rude intentions and mean it in a purely affectionate way... I’m just talking about the “other” people..lol.
Can anyone relate, or am I alone on this one?

I can relate... I get that sometimes especially on Y!A from some passive aggressive hick chick momma bear (easier to think of them that way... heheh) It's best to ignore it and just respond intelligently without resorting to the same rhetorical tricks.

btw, It's clearly not a term of endearment when they tell you to "shut up" or "get lost" in the previous sentence...

Oh come on hun… Don’t be like that, Sweetie, OK…
Just don’t give them your 10 Points !!!

Sorry, but I’m sort of looking at the problem from an outsider’s point of view, in that I don’t have people calling me hun or sweetie, simply because I don’t ask questions.

I will admit that when I read through other peoples’ responses to questions, it is somewhat ‘annoying’ when I see those words being used so often.

All I can suggest is that when it comes to selecting the Best Answer, ignore the ones that call you hun or sweetie.
When awarding your 10 Points, throw in a comment about why the answer you selected as Best Answer was chosen by you, and throw in a comment about not being called hun or sweetie.

Hopefully, people will start getting the idea.
Have a good day, hun !!!
(Sorry about my warped sense of humour!)

Sweetum's you're alone on this. It's a term of endearment, meant to be loving when no relationship exists or when you're strangers like in a venue like this one. And coming from me, I'm entitled to use such terms, you're obviously younger than me.! lol

hugs

I can completely relate. My mother in law calles me "Miss" and "Missy" I hate it and feel really offended by it because it makes me feel really small. I think people are usually just trying to be affectionate and nice...but it really does erk me.

unfortunately people will call us and other names that grate on us. The test of character is how you deal with it and the wisdom to know you do things that erk them out too!

No, you're not the only one it bothers. It's usually older women that I hear saying it (to everyone). It's annoying when people address me as guy. As in, "How's it going, guy"
So, it's not just you.

Doesn't bother me. I always try to give people the benifit of the doubt, and think positive.
