Hi gang, I'm a middle-aged lady; had a few illnesses in my life but not especially at the moment; and it seems as if all I want to do is sleep. I'll sleep through the alarm clocks in the morning; it's a real effort of will to get up and stay up; I drift off to sleep on train journeys or when I sit down of an afternoon or evening. I'm self-employed and really need to work hard and this inability to wake and stay awake is really distressing. Please help?

Everyone needs a different amount of sleep. I need 10 hours to function as a human. I rarely get that! I've gone the last 3 days on a few hours & feel like hell. If you need too much sleep & suffer from fatigue it could be a sign of depression, it could be your diet (not eating healthy foods) or you may not be getting enough exercise. Exercising boosts your energy levels (if you can just force yourself to do it!) & also helps you to get better more restful sleep. Another possibility is that you may not be getting enough out of your sleep. If you're restless, keep waking up & aren't getting enough R.E.M. sleep. You may have some other medical condition that's sapping your energy...talk to your doctor about it & see what they suggest.

Good luck.

Since you can work the hours you want, try to get at least 8-10 hours of sleep a day. If you have to take a sedative to get to sleep fast, do it. If you work nights and need to sleep in the day, make sure you turn your phone off, darken the windows and use earplugs. Go to sleep at the same time every day and wake up at the same time everyday. You might need to sleep less than 8 hours, more like 6 and get up and stay busy, non stop. Wear yourself out while awake and you'll sleep more soundly and feel more rested. Keep a pattern of wake and sleep hours and don't let anyone disturb your routine until you have mastered your up time and down time.

Any chance that you are not sleeping properly? how many hours of sleep do you get a night? needing about 7h30 to 8 hours a night is normal, but if you have intermittent breathing you may actually not rest well enough.

If you go to bed early enough, then see your doctor. It may be a sign of a depression, or he may have simple tricks for determining your sleep patterns.

You should have a sleep study done on you, to see if you have sleep apthia. I have it over a deviated septum, that I had to have operated on. I was always tired, when I thought I was sleeping for 12 hours a day, when I really never sleep at all, right.
