The more detail you add in your topic and the more to say, the more words you'll have in your essay. However, remember keep it to the point and focused.Make sure you don't go off on a long tangent about something totally irrelevant. It's okay if you know more about the subject than you include.

Always expand on small paragraphs.

If you are having trouble organizing your thoughts, try a Spider Graph. Draw a circle in the middle of a blank sheet of paper. Write your topic in the middle. Draw 5 lines from the circle in different directions. On the first line Write intro and draw 5 lines from that. In those 5 lines, 3 must support your main topic, then those 3 go on the following three lines connected to the circle, and so on and so forth.

If writing an essay on your opinion, such a debate-like essay, never write "I believe" or "I think". Just state your belief as if it were fact.

Well, you could say, "it's not their job, it's the parents' job." You'd be right, I suppose, but I doubt it's practical. How does one teach an English class and read classic novels without discussing moral values? Now, teachers need not impose their own moral values when doing this. Almost certainly they will have to enforce some rules that have a moral connotation: don't beat up your classmates, don't cheat, don't steal, etc.
