The word is polyandry. How did I get into this category? It is practiced in every country except The Holy See. Generally it is a cultural exception and illegal.

The word is POLYANDRY which is the opposite of POLYGAMY (one man marrying more than one wife) and means that One woman marries more than one husband. Polygyny is not commonly practised in the world , except few remote pockets where the local culture allows it. The rationale behind this practice was mainly twofold. First was in places where population was scarce there was need for more men to help in farming and other activities and to retain the property as joint and work harmoniously this practice came into effect. Another important reason was that, during the times of war when the male population which went to the war created a demographic vaccum the husband of the dead person married his widow to accord protection to her. In the larger context polygyny was an added bondage to the joint family system in some parts of the world.

It is practised here in the Canadian arctic by some of our Inuit tribes as a means of ensuring survival of the family. It is usually limited to brothers and close relatives of the woman's spouse in an effort to create male offspring.
