I would imagine commemorative coins, such as the £5 coin, are worth more than £5 as they are limited in numbers and usually 'bought' from the Royal Mint.

Also, Maundy Money is very rare and I recall some appearing on eBay a while ago for significantly more than its face value

In the USA, UK commemorative coins are collected and bring more than their face value. There are listing in the Standard Catalog of World coins for 50 pence, pound, 2 pound and 5 pound coins, that are collector items. Others also are listed. There are a lot of world coin collectors that collect coins of GB, a large group here and in Canada, our good neighbor to the north.

Older 2p coins have been worth 3p lately. This is because of the price of copper has soared!!!
It is illegal to melt them down though.

Yes loads . look on e-bay you will see people buying £1 coins for a fiver etc ! What`s that all about then ?
