width = x
area = 147 square feet

3x multiplied by x = 3x squared
3x squared = 147
x squared = 147 divided by 3 = 49
x = square root of 49 = 7

so the width is 7 square feet

This really depends on what type of TREE we are talking about...Obvousily an oak tree would be larger then say a ficus or maybe a palm tree...hmm... a conundrum.
