Spy Agencies Say Iraq War Worsens Terror Threat

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 — A stark assessment of terrorism trends by American intelligence agencies has found that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.

The classified National Intelligence Estimate attributes a more direct role to the Iraq war in fueling radicalism than that presented either in recent White House documents or in a report released Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee, according to several officials in Washington involved in preparing the assessment or who have read the final document.

The intelligence estimate, completed in April, is the first formal appraisal of global terrorism by United States intelligence agencies since the Iraq war began, and represents a consensus view of the 16 disparate spy services inside governm

An opening section of the report, “Indicators of the Spread of the Global Jihadist Movement,” cites the Iraq war as a reason for the diffusion of jihad ideology.

The report “says that the Iraq war has made the overall terrorism problem worse,” said one American intelligence official.

More than a dozen United States government officials and outside experts were interviewed for this article, and all spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a classified intelligence document. The officials included employees of several government agencies, and both supporters and critics of the Bush administration. All of those interviewed had either seen the final version of the document or participated in the creation of earlier drafts. These officials discussed some of the document’s general conclusions but not details, which remain highly classified.

Officials with knowledge of the intelligence estimate said it avoided specific judgments about the likelihood that t

The relationship between the Iraq war and terrorism, and the question of whether the United States is safer, have been subjects of persistent debate since the war began in 2003.

National Intelligence Estimates are the most authoritative documents that the intelligence community produces on a specific national security issue, and are approved by John D. Negroponte, director of national intelligence. Their conclusions are based on analysis of raw intelligence collected by all of the spy agencies.

Analysts began working on the estimate in 2004, but it was not finalized until this year. Part of the reason was that some government officials were unhappy with the structure and focus of earlier versions of the document, according to officials involved in the discussion.

Previous drafts described actions by the United States government that were determined to have stoked the jihad movement, like the indefinite detention of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay and the Abu Ghraib prison abuse s

I absolutely feel safer. There have not been any new terror attacks on American soil. Why is this? Because they are tied up in Iraq and Afghanistan. These crazy fanatics are coming out of the woodwork. I say good, let's get them out in the open, as opposed to having them simmer unseen until such a time as they can attack. The United States is not creating terrorists, fanatical upbringing and disenchantment is creating terrorists. How many people in this country hate the government and it's actions? How many of those people are strapping bombs to themselves and blowing up innocents? Make all the excuses for terrorism you want, but no one ever said this fight was going to be easy. We turned a blind eye to terrorism for 30 years in this country. We attempted to appease everyone in the world at every turn. What did it get us? An end to terrorism? No, it awarded us an escalating pattern of violence in the world. Bury your head in the sand if you like. Tell yourself it's all America's fault if you must. Just understand that the vast majority of us are not willing to follow failed policies anymore. We have tried it your way, and history proved that we were wishful fools as a result. The time has come for action, support it or not, it doesn't matter, but the day has come whether you like it or not. The only way to end terrorism is to foster freedom in the world. There is a reason why free countries do not engage in wars with each other. As freedom grows so does quality of life, and tolerance. In short, give people something to live and hope for, and they are less inclined to choose death.

sslpatt: What facts? An article citing a classified document, and undisclosed sources? From a news agency which has proven that it is more than willing to embarass the administration in any way possible, and isn't above leaking classified information. Personally, I didn't dispute anything the article said. If you want to talk about reasoning ability, try giving us some rather than trying to discredit others for opinions you don't agree with.

President Bush has tried hard and he has maintained a refusal to compromise on the Iraq war which has gained him some support from hard line hawks. However, standing back from the war and looking at it objectively, under Bush’s leadership as Commander-in-Chief, virtually no results have been positive. Iraq is still out of America’s control in many key areas. After five years we are still struggling to keep Bagdad secure. $500,000,000.00 has been spent so far, enough to pay off government debt bills and/or provide significant social programs or tax relief. In summary, G W Bush is a failure. The Republican Party should be voted out of office in November.

Excellent Question!

I think there can be no doubt that the Bush's War on Iraq has completely backfired. There are over a billion muslims in the world and if only 1/100th of 1 percent become outraged enough to replicate the 9/11 terrorists, we will have about 135,000 new terrorists angry enough to blow themselves up to fight what they see as Israel supporting, oil-addicted, overbearing American imperialism. Now that's a scary thought.

Maybe Christ was right when he taught us that violence is counter-productive.

You know Bush's war on terror and the illegal conflict and occupation of Iraq has worsened things already because we are much more vulnerable to a terrorist attack! The jihadists are ready to attack at will! All Bush did was to sit on his freaking *** and lie about it! Why it's because of Bush's incompetency of doing his job of protecting the homeland in this post-9/11 world! And it's going to be a lot moire dangerous before the dust settles! Just wait and see for yourselves!!!!!!!

Anybody with a common sense will know that the Iraq invasion, just as the war in Afghanistan fuels terrorism. Turn it around and Iraq comes to invade the US to get rid of Bush and then to stay and brutalize the people and to commit crimes against them. What would you do? Sit at home and watch CNN or act? Why would you need an article to prove a proven point.

2 days after 9/11 we Americans had the sympathy of the whole world (radical extremest too, they were just in shock of what they did,)I believe if Bush had played on that sympathy instead of starting a war that had nothing to do with Iraq or the Taliban (sure there are allot of bad guys out there that don't like Americans )there would be allot less terrorism today. lets hope he goes back to Texas soon!!
