I'd recommend going to see Christiania, there are some amazing houses and strange people to look at - also the food and music there is really good.
If you are American and not accustomed to old buildings, I'd definitely recommend seeing "Børsen", "Amalienborg" (where the queen lives), "Christiansborg" (seat of the parliament), "Rosenborg" (where the crown jewels are on display) or "Nyboder" (a part of the city build by King Christian IV 400 years ago, and still used for housing soldiers in the navy); also you could take a trip to Helsingør (app. 30 kilometres from Copenhagen) to see "Kronborg" - Hamlet's castle.
The national museum is also worth a visit, as is "Nyhavn" (very pricy, but pretty).
Have a great time in Copenhagen! Be sure to bring walking-boots and a raincoat.

I have been in Copenhagen for 2 months now and I haven't found anything really "off the beaten path". There and tourist everywhere beating the hell out of that path. I guess that it didn't seem like there were too many tourists at the graveyard where Hans Christian Anderson and Soren Kirkegard were buried. It was very pretty actually. You can take a short train ride up across the bridge to Malmo, Sweden but I haven't done that yet so I can't say what is over there. We just went up north just out of the city today to my husbands friends summer house and we saw so many amazing houses along the water in the area called Hellerup. That's pretty. You can take the train to where the Hamlet castle is. I don't think it is too far out of town. The zoo here is actually pretty good and if you are here in mid October I think Tivoli might be open for a week. It is tourist but it is a pretty fun amusement park. I think the only way to see anything really different is to rent a bike (just ask at tourist info) and ride around where ever you want. It ain't a big place. Oh and whether it is touristy or not you have to see Christiania. It is this hippy commune in the city. It is so weird.

The Mermaid statue is always a winner. Otherwise, go into the Muslem sections of the various towns and call out, "Islam is a crapo religion" and you will have some very interesting experiences and can take all kinds of nifty snapshots of the various riots you set off.
