Also the house is only 18 months old (newbuild) and all the plumbing is all plastic pipes so it cannot be rust. The water is very soft in this area with a ph of 6.8.

couple of possibilities
1) The new build may have used plastic pipes but the old distribution pipework from the treatment works may till have a section of cast iron pipework which has badly corroded.
2) Some algae is red but needs light to grow and you do not say how long after using the shower the pink / red appear
Suggest you contact the Quality Department of your supplier if you are in UK. They will come and take a sample and analyse it for you. Better to write to them as QA systems have to resolve any queries on record and telephone calls and emails can get 'lost' in the system.

Don't mess about any longer asking this lot for advice - just bear in mind that whatever is causing this stain is probably not doing you and your family much good, so ask your water company, and do it NOW.

It sounds like you have a high concentration of iron in your water. You might try installing a "whole house" filter.

My guess is the bacteria in the water. Drywall will absorb all that water. Enough heat in your house and the bacteria will grow.

You've got a lot of iron in your water. The only thing you can do is to install filters.
