1 Barrel = 42 US gallons = 35 Imperial Gallons = 159 Litres = 19 1/2 gallons of Gasoline

This measurement started in Pennsylvania Oil Fields.
It is based on wine measurement system called 'tierce'.
A Barrel is not actually used to transport crude oil. Crude is transported in tankers/ships. Barrel is only unit of measurement, pricing and taxation.
