If you move to Portland, some or it's vicinities (there are several surrounding cities) are better than others. I live south, in Salem, so I can't say which is right for you, but some are very nice. As with most major cities, your location can be a major factor in schools, crime, employment, etc. Some are VERY nice.
The Pacific Northwest offers some of the most beautiful landscape imaginable. There are beaches (which you probably don't want to see - I hope your family wasn't horribly affected by Katrina), valleys, foothills, mountains, plateaus. deserts, forests...
There's a large amount of rain here, but when the sun it out, it's always really warm, and you learn to appreciate those summer days real well. And the rain isn't really that bad, once you get used to it. A large amount of the days here are just mild weather.
We're also the only part of the country not subject to major events (no hurricanes, snowstorms, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc.) We have many dormant volcanoes, which offer great skiing, but that's about it, as far as any possibilities for major events.
Oregon gets overlooked a lot. We're the nine biggest state by size, but have less than 5 Million people. There's a lot of history here, too. Lewis & Clark ended their journey just on the other side of the Columbia, in Southern Washington. The Oregon Trail (obviously) also ended here.
I haven't travelled a lot, so I can't compare Portland to the other cities you've listed. All I can say it I'm very happy to live in the Great Northwest, and I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

Well, New Mexico has alot of places like that. We didn't get any snow last winter but should get some this year. It melts off by the next day. The rent here is about 350.00 per month depending on where you live. We have a nice lake and alot of people visit all year round. We raised our daughter here. We came here to visit someone 20 years ago and loved it so much we stayed. Very low crime rate too. Work depends on what you do. You can make your own jobs. I am self employed. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Come To Alaska!!!! Allot of jobs opening and looking for good collage grads. The weather is great with 24 hrs. of day lite in the summer and good cool weather in the winter. The Northern Lites put on a show every night, just bring a couple of warm sleeping bags to watch the show and maybe some hot coffee...

Austin, Texas is a wonderful city. Lots of things to do and a great place to raise a family. The job market is excellent too. The other cities you mentioned are too overpriced and overpopulated. I'd recommend Austin, you'll get more of your money's worth.

You may think this is funny, but New York City would be a great choice. NY is America's safest large city. It is job rich--especially in your field! and the weather is not that bad. Great selection of schools to choose from. . .and the people are great.
