I have been travelling in and out of Indonesia for 16 years, and have lived in Jakarta for a good amount of that time and have never had problems. Generally speaking Indonesia is quite safe and the people warm and freindly. But like anywhere in the world you have to be aware of your surroundings and try not to attract attention by wearing alot of jewellary or flashing wads of money. My advice is to go to Indonesia it really is worth the trip.

It depends which part of Indonesia are you planning to visit.
The top 2 cities, Jakarta and Bali are relatively safe despite the recent bad press Indonesia has had. Don't attract unnecessary attention to yourself by wearing something that's too exposed, or something that's too bling-bling. You can still see a lot of foreigners in these two countries, walking about casually minding their own business. Probabilty of being killed in a terrorist act is still very low compared to being killed in an auto accident.
Just be prudent and you'll be fine.

Ally,
I travel there about once a year with my son. Each time I go I'm amazed at the number of women traveling alone that I meet. It seems very safe even in the touristy areas. We stay at Villa Naga Maya in the heart of Legian (love the pools and the staff), I enjoy the shopping, the food, and love the early morning walks on the beach when it's only locals and fisherman.
We enjoy the people so much, it's getting harder to leave each year.
hope you visit their Island soon

Yes it is safe, I traveling in and out and never had a problem, even in it the problem times it was safe. Every place have its dangers, just make sure you don't go around in dark places on your own, but you have nothing to worry about

No place is completely safe to visit. What you need to do is define "safe" in your mind. How many/few thefts, murders, diseases must there be for you to find it safe? We can't really answer but on our own ideas of the word until then.
