You should not be able to read this answer just yet.... You should have your computer turn off and everything plugged out by now!!!
Unless of course it is a laptop and you have wireless connection.
Good luck!

Last week, during the night, we could see lightning and hear thunder from a distance.
Then, quite literally, the 'bolt out of the blue' struck phone lines nearby. My husband and I love watching storms - but that one really scared us! I took my computer to the computer hospital because the next evening it was telling me that it did not have a dial up signal and was told that the modem had been messed up because of a surge on the telephone line.
I doubt that it is unsafe to use your computer for you, but it might be unsafe for the computer - and if you think that the storm is that close, then unplug everything - including the modem!

If it is thuder storm, then use corded telephone only for emergencies. And unplug computer since lightning can cause serious damage. Don't think home/small office UPS can help that much if power surges from lightning.
If there is no thuderstorm and you have good UPS, then may be ok to use computer but you do want to save your work often.

The mother board in our computer was damaged in one storm and the computer wasn't on, but the strike was so close to the house we were told that the static caused by the strike could have done it.

All those delightful little components that go to make up a computer just love extremes of current from the mains and down the telephone line, so just put it all outside in the rain, still plugged in and switched on....NOT!
(Wrote it like that to catch everybody's attention - pull the bleeding plugs like yesterday !!!!!!!!!!!)

Shut it down immediately! and turn off at power outlet. You could get a power surge from the storm and it will affect your hard drive.

Good Question loads of answers.
First if you think its unsafe then don't do it.
Second there may be fluctulations in the power supply, or total power loss that will crash your computer.
Third if your house gets struck by lightening, the pc will be the last thing you worry about as your house is demolished.

Safe, yes, but a bit dodgy. Save, save save. If the electricity supply goes down you'll lose anything not saved
