How can u distinguish between 80s sythn-pop and 80s dance music?

Ok i was born in 1987, so i wasn't really alive during the 80s, does anyone know wat was dance music? I know technotronic and New Order ect would definotly b dance music, but to my ears Duran Duran - Rio or Hungry Like the Wolf are \sythn-pop and dance. how did they draw a distinction (if they did?)

dance music, i think is kind of our modern techno. if that isnt it, my second guess might be hip hop or rap.
