I know its a part of Italy but Sicily is the East whereas Milan and Venice are the west. My culture is far more like Greeks than like Brits.

The terms "Eastern" and "Western" Eurpope have more to do with the politics than geography. Russia for example is considered Eastern European, but the vast majority of the country lies in northern Asia.

The fact that it is closer to Albania (although it was communist it was not considered politically eastern by the west) than it is to Sweeden is as relevant as Kentucky being closer to Ohio than it is to Texas, but Kentucky is southern, and Ohio is norhtern U.S. Besides, outside of Italy, the closest country to Sicily is France.

I am Sisilian, and will always consider myself a "Southern Eurpopean"

First of all, Sicily is considered to be part of Italy, and is not a seperate country.

When you look at a map of Europe, Italy is in the western part of Europe, whereas Sweden and Norway are more in the eastern part.

It appears you've got your coordinates mixed up.

Maybe because it's not an independant country, and Italy is considered western europe?
