Not to avoid answering your question precisely, but I tend to evaluate whole albums, as I think an album (CD) tends to encompass a bands creative force during any given phase. I'm 41 and I just bought "the Song Remains the Same" soundtrack (Zep). I've been listening to it every day during my commute. I also enjoy "Vol IV" (Sabbath), and Rush "2112." Don't let me omit "Powerage," AC/DC. These albums don't contain any of the bands most popular and overplayed singles, but they are awesome, nonetheless.

Originally - In-a-Gadda-DA-Vida by Iron Butterfly
later it could be argued that "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin took over.
Those are my choices. I guess it shows my age.

it's hard to pick just one song but early ac/dc stuff(bon scott stuff) is excellent but then you can't go past old stuff like Led Zepplin, The Who, Black Sabbath and even Kiss!!
