This should offer you no problems at all. First of all look at the stone carefully to make sure there are no cracks as these weaken the stone and can allow coloured liquids to penetrate the stone leaving ugly marks. To remove the grease and dirt use a solution of washing-up liquid in water and a soft brush, the water must not be more than just tepid as opals can react badly to sudden temperature changes. Rinse in clean water and pat dry with a soft cloth. I would avoid using alcohol as a cleaning fluid as there are many opals on the market which made by cementing a thin layer of opal on to a black backing stone (a doublet) and others which also have a dome of clear quartz on the top as well (triplet) In these cases alcohol may possibly affect the cement used to hold the parts together and cause damage. If you are not 100% sure your opal not one of these better be safe than sorry and use water even if you do need to take a little more time over the job.
