Right now he is already more than just a pest, and he is gunning to become much more. The present administration's priorities have us all focused on the Middle East, and Chavez is exploiting the situation to get away with figurative (and possibly literal) murder right under our noses.
Remember that American and European oil companies spent a ton of money figuring out how to tap the very difficult oil fields of Venezuela and developing them into the largest potential producer of oil in the world, and in then last year Chavez nationalized the oil fields. We loose all the investment (that money gets passed to us in energy prices on energy coming from OTHER sources now) and are denied the only hopes we had of controlling energy prices by having an alternative to the middle east.
Chavez's nationalistic rants read almost identically to Hitler's speaches of the late 1920's and early 1930's. Chavez's background, oratory, political strategies, and exploitation of economic divisions and xenophobia are nearly identical to Hitler's -- so similar that in all likelihood he is modeling his political career on that of Hitler. His nationalizing of energy production is also very Hitler-esque. If he puts that oil money to use building a significant navy or a lot of of submarines, it will spell major problems.
Chavez is a paranoid conspiracy theorist but one who has an army with actual weapons backing him up, and a significant stranglehold on western hemisphere energy. That is a bad combination.
Chavez pushes a socialist agenda which has NEVER produced anything but pain, suffering, deprivation, and unrest anywhere in the world. Guess who is going to have to deal with the fallout and clean up the mess after the whole country implodes on itself in 30 or 40 years? You guessed it, us. I'm tired of sending our people to die in foreign lands and flushing trillions of dollars dowwn the toilet because of idiotic self-serving despots like Hugo Chavez, aren't you?

All Hugo Chavez cares about is keeping the world's eye on our government. It is in his own personal and national interest. And if acting over the top gets it done that's what he'll do. I can't blame him since our government has thrown around terms like communist, socialist, weapons of mass destruction, evil dictator etc etc. as justification to flatten a country and take over it's oil as seen in Iraq. We hear the same story regarding Iran and Venezuela. As long as the world and the nation keeps a close eye on what is happening then no liberties can be taken to take military action for unjustified reasons and other nations will have to make up their mind about it. GW Bush will have to make his case in the matter. Another point that Chavez makes clearly is that he is not out to gouge anyone with gas prices, not domestically or internationally. I think that's a note worth taking. However, there is a larger picture here. And that's the state of our relations with all world leaders. Which is precisely why people in this country do not think W is smart and wiley and manly and making us safe (and that's just aside from the fact that he goes after everyone BUT actual terrorists, but that's another day). Because it is important to have friendly relations with small countries and large countries. It isn't prudent to ignore and disrespect a nation because you think they're too small to harm you. Then the day comes that you're standing alone on the playground with 12 little motley nations that are mad as hell.

I agree he makes quite a fool of himself with the John Wayne act but at the same time it is refreshing to hear that a country, in his name, openly opposes Bush and his administration. Nobody dares because of economic interests and fear of losing the super world powered allie, even when they don't agree. Look at Holland, our minister of foreign affairs was so angry with Bush that he lied about the secret CIA prisons in Eastern Europe, that he felt brutalized and made a fool of but what is the outcome? He says: well, I have talked about it, it is time to drop the subject. Good example of cowardliness all the way. At least Chavez has some balls although I don't like him a bit, same for Castro.

You're right. No one really likes him. Except for 95% of the world's population outside the US. But non-Americans don't count as people, right? So no one really likes him.
