Don't waste good gin!!! Make yourself a nice martini to get into the working mood. Buy some industrial alcohol from your local hardware shop - as good as gin and you get a lot more change in your pocket. Just soak the items for an hour or two and then use a soft brush to get the dirt out. You can also use warm water with some washing-up liquid in the same way. Give the items a good rub with a soft, lint free cloth and this should be enough in most cases. If the gold really does need polishing don't spend a lot on special polishes, tooth paste works just as well. Apply it with a soft cloth and a soft brush to get into the difficult bits then wash off in running water and pat dry on a cloth. It works wonders in most cases. You need not worry about stones other than Turquoise, Coral, Pearl and Opal. With these water is fine as long as you do not soak for a long time (distilled water is best) but avoid other chemicals.

I was told by a jeweler that Mr. Clean and a soft tooth brush works.

soak it in gin a short time and wipe with a soft cloth or soft toothbrush. works great with diamonds too. NEVER soak pearls though.
