I would say that no research is value-free. But scientology is no different from any other aspect of society in this regard. Research of poverty or paedophilia is not 'value free' either. Any researcher will make assumptions implicit in their choice of questions, some they will be aware of and some not. Just choosing to see scientology as a religion doesn't make you more values-free than if you are biased against it as a "cult", it simply means you hold different values.

What you CAN strive to be is non-judgemental.

If you are doing research you must know how to support your premise and reference others but if you are asking if L Ron Hubbard was a clever con artist, well I guess not to those who do not buy into his scam - they will give you a value laden answer like this one!
