Two tips: valerian tablets (a herbal remedy) which are fantastic. you can buy them on line at mailordrevitamins.co.uk or visioning, which is where, for example, you imagine that you're walking along a busy street, with all the noise and hassle, and you imagine seeing a small door, which you open. when you enter, you find yourself in a cool, quiet courtyard with a fountain (for example), or a mountainside with a beautiful view. You focus on the silence and the beauty of the view. This stops your mind from racing. Sound weird, but it does work, though it takes a bit of practice

Exercise each day, do not watch t.v or use your p.c. an hour before bed, do not eat anything 2 hours before bed, ensure your room is dark. perhaps install a black out blind, I always find reading a few pages of a magazine while lying in bed face down helps it tires my eyes. If you are stresed try to eliminate it. If you can establish a routine of going to bed at the same time every night and following the advice above you may get to sleep naturally. Remember alcohol will help you get to sleep but also wakes you several times during the night so give it a miss for a while too. Otherwise get herbal sleeping tablets or goto your doctor.

Meditation

first get yourself completely comfortable, no tight clothing , uncomfortable bed etc. lay on your back with your arms to the side and first think about your breathing, not in the normal way of breathe in breathe out but first breathe out to purge the body of all that dead stale air, count to yourself while doing it and then breathe in all that good air while counting but for a shorter period than you counted while breathing out. After a while you'll have a good rhythm then you can concentrate your thoughts on relaxing your body, begin with your feet and hands and work your way toward your centre. If you're not soon able to sleep you at least will have refreshed your body. I read somewhere that 20 minutes meditation is as good for your body as a nights sleep, don't really know if it's true as I never have a problem sleeping now I meditate.
Good luck and sleep well.

Both melatonin and L-theanine are natural substances. L-theanine is found in green tea and in capsule form which is much stronger. Schiff makes a product that combines both. But read up on each substance because the amount of melatonin in a tablet is 10 times the amount in a normal human being. It is quite strong and hasn't gone through the rigors of double-blind placebo controlled testing.

Sometimes there isn't a natural way. If there was, you's eb able to get back asleep therefore you wouldn't have insomnia. I'd try Benadryl 25-50 mg right before bed (check package for suggested dose for your weight/age) and decrease all stimulus (turn off lights, tv, computer, etc.) close your eyes and drift away. If that doesn't help, see your doc as you may need something perscribed.

Dont drink tea or coffee close to bed time. Exercise in the day. Get fresh air. Drink warm milk or horlicks before bed. Dont worry about anything that might have upset you earlier in the day. Go for a brisk walk in the evening.

Sorry preeth 71. Taking any medication, wheather herbal or not, is not natural.

Melatonin is a great supplement or "Calms" by Highland brands. They are both all natural, non-habit forming, and do not leave you groggy in the a.m. Both can be purchased at Wal-mart and are very inexpensive. (They are in the vitamin/supplement area.) Follow label directions. Calms is also very effective for nervous tension and PMS moods and can be used during the daytime. Melatonin is strictly to be used at night to supplement you natural melatonin production. Give both a try, either one will give you a good nights sleep. Good Luck!

All of the above but being really physically active during the day will induce a natural tiredness but not going to the gym in the evening - just peps you up. If you just cannot, get up and do something like watch a dvd of comedy, laugh your socks off and it is better than 'tossing and turning' - also face the possibility you are one of us who do not need the 'normal' quota' of the great lazys!

Best way to get a good nights sleep is to have a hot bath before you go to bed. Better still if you have some radox or something. I always do this when I'm exited about going somewhere and find it difficult to sleep.

It helps if you stir a teaspoon of syrup into a glass of warm milk and drink it as hot as you comfortably can.

Otherwise you can try this basic form of self-hypnosis:
Close your eyes, and picture yourself standing on the top of a high tower with spiralling steps going down. Repeat to yourself that with every step you take, you will become more relaxed and your eyes will become heavier and harder to open. Remember, repetition is key!

Now visualize yourself taking one step down, think to yourself, I am becoming more relaxed and sleepy. Then take another step down, repeating, "I am bacoming more relaxed with each step".

Keep taking steps down in your mind, and you'll find yourself becomeing more and more relaxed. You will soon naturally drift off to sleep. The time this takes depends on how succeptible you are to hypnosis, but it works with most people I council.

Sweet dreams!
