Hate is a strong word. I think its wrong for him to come to this country and call our President the Devil, no matter who the President is.
He can legitimately criticize the American policies all he wants but name calling just shows a lack of class.

First let's start with current oil prices -- American and European oil companies spent all the money figuring out how to tap the very difficult oil fields of Venezuela and developing it into the largest potential producer of oil in the world, and in return they get screwed -- Chavez nationalizes the oil fields, taking 60% control (minimum) of all of the oil production companies in Venezuela, meaning WE have to pay for all that development through higher prices at the pump EVEN ON OIL FROM OTHER FIELDS, and the only hopes we had of controlling energy prices went down the toilet because now HE gets to set them.
Second, Chavez's nationalistic rants read almost identically to Hitler's nationalistic rants of the late 1920's and early 1930's. His background and political strategies and exploitation of economic divisions and xenophobia are nearly identical to Hitler's. Indeed, they are so similar that in all likelihood he is modeling his political career on that of Hitler. His insistence on nationalizing energy production "for the good of the state" is also very Hitler-esque. That should cause a lot of concern for anyone. If he puts that oil money to use building a significant navy or a lot of of submarines, it should cause a whole lot more than just concern.
Third, he is a paranoid conspiracy theorist not far removed (if at all) from the tinfoil-hat-wearing conspiracy nutcases who think our own government was behind 9/11/2001 and that we never went to the moon. But in his case, he will have an army with actual weapons backing him up and a significant stranglehold on western hemisphere energy. That is a bad combination.
Fourth, the socialist agenda which he espouses has NEVER produced anything but pain, suffering, deprivation, and unrest anywhere in the world that it has been applied. He knows it too, but he doesn't give a damn -- he'll be living fat and happy in his palaces while his countrymen starve, and he'll just keep telling them that they are suffering because of the USA and he is the only thing saving them from being destroyed by the "Imperialist Yanquis." And since this is right in our own backyard guess who is going to have to deal with the fallout and clean up the mess after the whole friggin' country implodes on itself? You guessed it, us. I'm tired of sending our people to die in foreign lands because of idiotic self-serving despots like Hugo Chavez. Let the damn piranhas have him, I say. If it doesn't make them sick choking down that much slime.
There's four starting points right off the top of my head, and it's well after my bedtime when my brain can't remember squat...
Hate him? No, I don't. But I do despise him. There is a difference.

Perception is like a fire devouring everything in its path. Hugo Chavez perceives that Bush is the devil. Why? Chavez has his own beliefs and ideas just like you and I. The best way I like to describe perception is the script of the movie "crash", granted its just a movie based around racial tension but is does a excellent job bringing out perception. What you see and read may not always be reality or the full story, always question, why, why, why. How do you know if what you are reading or watching on TV is fact? I always ask myself, what is this person trying to get through to me and why. Remember, regardless of whom it is, everyone always has an agenda. My opinion about Chavez, I think he is not very smart, has lots of money, idles revolutionaries (like Castro), basis his thoughts & decisions on speculation, books and power hungry tactics. Why is Chavez all up in Castro's booty? Castro is merely a figure that has done nothing great for mankind or society. Castro is nothing and so is Chavez. Who cares about Cuba or Venezuela, what do they offer for you and I? What have these countries done to improve civilization? Nothing, they are not innovators, they are copy cats, that take ideas innovated by individuals in the United States (the greatest country on this planet). For example, oil refinery. In a nut shell, Chavez is all talk and can not accomplish what he would really like to do (demolish the U.S.) so he speaks ignorant comments and acts like a common street thug that tries to intimidate others. He jealous of the U.S. and our power around the globe and what we stand for. No matter how hard Chavez tries, he will never amount to anything profound or brilliant that would accomplish anything significant except for stirring the pot. No matter what the subject is, history will always repeat itself. (verify it!)

I don't hate him. I don't know of him enough to go one way or another.
He does have a right to say those things. He said that the President was "the devil" and that he "should resign". It was probably somewhat disrespectful, since he was at the U.N. at the time, and since the U.N. is a peaceful venture between countries, it was not really appropriate to say it there. I'd also be upset over the fact that he said it on U.S. soil, but he was at the U.N., so it's not technically the U.S.
I don't like President Bush, but he's not the devil. If Chavez wants to say those things, however, he needs to go home and say them.

I don't hate Hugo Chavez, but his attitude towards my country causes me some concern as does his friendship with Fidel Castro, another perennial American hater and basher. Hugo and Fidel will continue to try and shoehorn their communist marxist ideas into all of South America any way they can. For a good view of what Castro has accomplished in Cuba, read the chapter on that country in P J O'Rourke's very funny book "Eat The Rich".

I think he's great. He did a lot for the poor in his own country, and he offers aid to the poor in the US.
That he mistook baby bush for the devil, when he at most rates a smallish demon is understandable, since the present US gouvernment has been shown to be involved in over 30 plots to pull down the democratically elected gouvernment of Venezuela.
A lot of Americans hate him, some because they listen to the hate propaganda of certain media groups, others because they can actually see the implicit threat from an example showing that politicians don't have to be totally corrupt and selfish.

"Hate" is too strong a word for what I feel about Hugo. More apt is how you would feel about a gnat that landed on your arm. Slap it, and it is gone.
