you may have tried these things - but i'll give you step by step guide and follow these and this should speed up
you computer
+get some spyware sweepers for your computer - download from www.download.com - trusted site and will not have any false positive programs on there - they test them you know - when doing a scan turn off the automatic retore points
+ do a disk clean up - click on start then all programs > assessories > system tools > then disk cleanup
+ yes do a defrag BUT do it in safemode because not so many programs running in the back ground (when starting up press the f5 or f8 - select the safemode) again under safemode
+ check the programs that startup when windows start - these may be running in the background and will slow down your computer - click start then run - type msconfig - click on the tab for startup - this should produce a list with ticks in it - these are the programs that start when windows start (this process is totally reversable) you can disable what you wnat you can create a short cut on your desktop instead- try disabling them alll then click ok and restart - I bet this will speed up you computer - try to leave the you anti virus etc running - do you need any of these - if you don't know what any of these startup programs are or system files - just type the file into google
+ Get some more ram
+ do a check on your hard drive for bad sectors - goto my computer - right click on the hard drive - then properties - then tools - then check your hard drive for errors - make sure that both the check boxes are checked - you'll get a error then restart - this will take a while
+ do a system file check - click start > run > type sfc /scannow
+ check in the eventviewer for clues to see if anything is throwing out error codes > start > run > type eventvwr.msc - look under the application and system - look for any errors or warnings (double click on them)- again google the results
The next part only if you are comfortable with the computer
+ if you are comfortable with the registry - click start - run type - regedit - navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/desktop - modify the MenuShowDelay and reduce the value 400 - (this milliseconds) this will make the start menu display quicker
+ you can also speed up your pc also by cutting down on some of the special effects - right click on my computer > select properties > then click on the advanced tab then click settings under the performance tab > select the option for "adjust for best performance"
+ also try disabling the indexing services - this may slow down searches of your own files (only takes about 1 minute extra) - but if your not bothered about this this - this will speed up you system - click start then run type services.msc - scroll down the list until you find indexing services - double click on it - in the drop down box ensure the disabled is selected
also using the msconfig as before - check the services tab and then hide all microsoft services > check to see if there are any processes that you do not need - be alittle bit careful with this option - again google if you need to find the prog
+ if you are a advanced user you can improve you speed by enabling NTFS and write caching - but may have already set this up when you installed windows
+ everytime windows accesses a file - the system keeps track of it and creates a timestamp - use this for disabling the time stamp - regedit again / now navigate / HKEY_LOCal_machine - CurrentControlSet - Control - FileSytem..... Depending on your system you should see on the right a entry called NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate - now modify the DWORD value, right click on this and select modify , and the type 1 in the box to disable it- Then OK and restart your computer
+ if you are using WiN XP and the majority of your programs are new and are not old programs- Turn of the legacy support - basically allow windows to run older programs - when you create a file the legacy support basically creates two file names one which will allow older versions of windows to recognise and one that windows xp recognises - back to regedit / navigate to / HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SYSTEM - CurrentControlSet and filesystem
on the right look for NtfsDisable8dotNameCreation right click on it and select modify - in the DWORD box type in 1
then ok and restart
+ and lastly but a bit extreme - do a full system recovery - i.e reinstall windows - you will lose any data but at least this will give you a computer as if it was brand new
Follow these steps and this will speed up your computer
Beware if using regedit be very cafeful - make sure you create a system restore point before you edit any of the registry files

This is a very stupid question. To make your computer become fastest though - Get a big wad of money and go to NASA ask them if the can sell you one just like theirs (trust me its not fastest like you want but you wont be disappointed) Next ask your cable supplier if they can install an exchange in your living room that way your internet connection wont be fastest like you want but you will not be dissappointed. If these dont work try reading up on the internet about computers and come back when you have some idea of what pc you have. DOH

First, empty out a lot of the guck slowing down your PC. Download and run Crap Cleaner (basic Analyze/Run for beginners; the advanced stuff for skilled users). Here's the link:
http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=Crap%20Cleaner&tag=srch
Clear out the pesky spyware that also is known to guck up your PC too with this free version program:
http://spywarebot.com/?hop=congoman
Here's an impressive freebie that works well, too: http://www.download.com/SpywareBlaster/3000-8022_4-10486084.html?tag=lst-0-1
It also helps if tons of saved digital cam pics and video are burned onto a CD and deleted afterwards from your hard drive.
Of course, this is only from the SOFTWARE facet: what if it's a HARDWARE issue???
To get free hardware tech answers, get a FREE account to www.suggestafix.com and pose your question. Be sure to check email alerts to submitted answers. I hope this helps.

Run Linux!!!!! It's FAST and FREE
Try Kubuntu - You can download it and burn it to a CD - pop it in and reboot - It will run from the CD so you can try it out without changing your system. If you like it you can install it. If you have enough room on your hard drive you can have both Windows and Linux - or get a second Hard Drive
http://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/linux/ubuntu-releases/kubuntu/6.06.1/
You will need to burn it as an ISO - See this link
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
The Kubuntu is a KDE version or you might like Ubuntu which is a GNOME version - see http://www.ubuntu.com

By running weekly maintenance on your computer, that should help you make it run to it's fullest capabilities. Clean out your temporary internet files, run your antivirus and spyware programs, get a regiistry cleaner. All of these things will help your computer run faster.
