some scientists think left handed people were actually suppose to be born with a mirror twin. mirror twins are twins that are opposites from each other, one is born left handed and one is born right handed.scientests believe that left handed people were created because their right handed mirror twin caused them to be left handed. unfortunately, the right handed mirror twin died in the womb of the mother at an early stage of developement and dissolved in the fluid in the womb. what was left was the left handed mirror twin. this would explain why only 9% of people on earth are left handed. what are you guys' thoughts on this theory?

there IS such a thing as mirror twins.

okay, it seems a lot of people were really offended with this theory. i just wanted to point out that this is not my theory, it is simply just something i heard and wanted peoples opinions about it. i also wanted to point out, its a theory, not a fact. there is no need to get angry and leave rude comments, it is only a question.

ummm... just about all you guys are wrong.

There ARE documented mirror twins, but not what you are describing here. Left handed people are not necessarily mirrors of anything. But, if there were a twinning split at day 9 -12 of gestation, then you could get one of the two twinned foetuses being reabsorbed and disappearing without a trace, so it's a legitimate theory...

A mirror twin is a twin whose body is reversed compared to their twin. Hair spirals the opposited direction, dimple on the other cheek, etc. In some cases a mirror twin has "situs inversus" then all the organs in the body are reversed. Their stomach, heart, etc are all mirror image to what is "normal". And they are twins with a twin who is "normal" orientations.

As one of the other repliers, i am ambidextrous, i can write well with both hands, draw, paint, etc. Does this mean i had an 'anti-twin' in the womb? If so, im glad they wern't born, as that would mean they wouldnt have been able to write, draw, paint al all, with either hand. Poor them.

To be left or right handed means to use a different side of the brain to control arm movements than most memebers of the population. This does not need a mirror twin to cause, any more than it needs god to have had a preference for making right handed people.
If left handed people require a 'right handed mirror' in the womb, then surely right-handed people in the womb require a left handed twin to have died (to balance them out??) So nearly every human child had a twin that died?? Poor us.
And then for twins where both children are both right handed, does that mean that two left handed twins must have died?.... this is all very sad. So, no. I definately dont believe that nearly every pregnancy involves the death of a 'twin' no more than i believe that every left handed child had a right handed twin. There is no evidence. One egg typically makes one baby. There is LOTS of proof/evidence/observations that this is the case. A few eggs split early on to give two or more children which are identical twins.

I have no idea which scientists who believe in mirror twins you are talking about, and im sure there are none afilated with any credible university that believe this.

Just when I thought people couldn't get stupider you go off and post this absurd question. No self respecting 'scientist' would tell you this stupid anti-matter doppleganger theory that is not even worth new age comic books!
Twins are easily detected in a pregnancy and dead kids don't 'dissolve' in the womb.
Actually when twins are born (and I don't believe in the cock and bull of this mirror twin idea) there is a greater probability that both are left handed.
The reasons for handedness are unknown but the best bet is brain anomaly, not mirror-twin mania!

Okay, I'm revising my answer after some research.

It is possible that this could be one reason why people are born left-handed but it is not the only reason. Please see the article below.

However, this does seem awfully far-fetched compared to some other less spectualar ways of becoming left handed.

If this theory were correct then it would mean that people who are ambidextrous are their own twin?
I think this theory is pretty far fetched.

It is interesting, but I would need some proof before I believe it.
