I had trouble dividing and I still can't remember the multiplication tables. I still have these problems but I'm at the top of my game in mathematics, I prefer more abstract aspects of math and always look for different solutions and proofs of anything I can find. I'm prepared to try anything and firmly believe that if we stood stuck to just one way of getting at the truth, the spectrum of truth would be a very thin one indeed.
Most grade school math teachers want you to remember stuff, they seem to think that's all you'll need for practical purposes. If you really love math and filter these people out you might just make something of yourself!

I never struggled with any aspect of math once I realized the secret was being neat and orderly. I grasped the fractions to the integral concepts.
I believe there's a lot of "formulas" that math books teach that are a total waste of time. My favorite one is the "distance formula"... its just Pythagorean theorem but kids waste a lot of time trying to memorize it.

I was an average math student myself; I did not find it boring, just hard; people who are bored with education generally turn out to be boring people. To be "bored" implies the teacher or school is at fault; but in actuality, it is much more the fault of the student themselves, or of society who has bombarded kids with "fun" activities to such an extent that anything viewed as "not fun" is boring to them. Think about these video games they play, and music they listen to, and TV they watch nowadays. I feel sorry for the kid who says he is bored with learning, as he has not been instilled with a sense of curiosity. And I must also say, kids say this as a "cop out", an excuse used to blame others for their own inability to enjoy learning. Don't fall for that excuse. Working at the correct "level" of education for each individual child may work for tutors, but is impossible in school settings, as schools accept ALL students of ALL abilities and must then teach ALL levels, often at a 35:1 ratio of student to teacher. You can only IMAGINE how difficult it is to be a successful teacher. They are very special people and deserve your support.
One does not make up an algorithm in math. They are provided for you, and have been proven. Perhaps you use that word in error. (and I must say this: it is definately a hard word to spell!! lol). Good luck.
