It depends on what skin type you have. The darker you are, the longer you can stay in the sun without getting sunburnt. The goal here is to tan without burning, because once you burn that's it--you have to stay out of the sun for the burn to heal. The sun is not as intense in late September so you should be able to stay out a little longer than you could have in July. Fair skinned people might burn in 20 minutes, while darker skinned people *might* last 2 hours or so, (black people much longer, but they don't need a tan, and I assume you're not black). Take the first day to test the waters, don't overdo it. If you don't get a little tan, stay out a little longer the next day.
Don't listen to the skin cancer crazies here. The media has been beating that horse to death. People most at risk for skin cancer are those with FRECKLES, very fair skin, and moles--and they are more at risk only when they received severe sunburns at some point in their lives. In general the sun is very healthy and a great source of vitamin D. As long as you don't burn, and don't overdo it, you'll be fine.

You can use that Lotion that gets you tanned in min...and no it won't make you look thinner, just makes you tanned...don't stay in the sun too long..the lotion is better...

two hours a day for a week in the sun will not give you a dark tan.
you may begin to tan, but it won;t be anywhere near dark.
I have a dep dark tan and maintain it year round. i spend may and june of each year in florida, out in the sun for 6-8 each sunny day. while back at home, i go to a tanning salon EVER day. from june through october i visit a nudist resort, only on sunny days to enable myself to get an overall dark tan. needless to say, i have no tan lines. my ENTIRE body is dark, almost too dark.
i've been tanning for 20 + years and my body is lean so i can't help you to answer that portion of your question. i am totally shave, from neck to upper thighs. that does make me look leaner and longer, if you know what i mean. i shave because the pubic hair interferes with tanning. yes, even my penis is darkly tanned, as well as my testicles.

2 hrs a week... yes but usually it depends on your skin type or ethnicity.... darker skin does tend to make you look more slim
