what? chickens don't have feathers. properly they have a nicely browned and finely seasoned batter of flour and cornmeal, pan fried to golden perfection. where do you eat?

Because they are birds, and birds evolved feathers for flight, protection from the elements(ecological selection) and to better attract a mate(sexual selection). I think you are basing this question on the faulty premise that chickens cannot fly (so why have feathers) but the truth is, chickens can fly, although not very well and not for long distances.

The short answer to your question is... chickens have feathers as a result of the evolutionary path they followed which was dictated by the various pressures of natural selection. Evolution will continue to shape and change chickens and they may one day have no wings at all but still have feathers if natural selection so dictates....

Hi Psycho, Feathers are for keeping the chicken warm,And to keep them from getting wet,When it rains.If the stupid bird doesn't stick it's head up in the air,and kills itself.Chicken aren't known for being smart.

evolution ... feathers allowed them to adapt to survive & reproduce... chickens without feathers were weeded out by natural selection (or never existed)... or perhaps chickens without feathers evolved into what is now an iguana.
