I've had mine for a little over a year...and now even when I fully charge it, it lasts about 20 minutes and then dies.

If you can replace the battery, how much does it usually cost?

You might as well buy a new one, I had the same problem, and they wanted to charge me about £80 to replace the battery.

Are you talking about the iPod Shuffle? If so, this is from their website directly (please note what it says about SHUFFLE battery life under #1):

1) Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles. Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information. Please note: iPod shuffle features a built-in rechargeable lithium polymer battery and is not replaceable. (2) Song capacity based on 4 minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding; actual capacity varies by content.
