The US is more powerful because of several factors.
One it has a much bigger economy and does a lot of traid internationally so it can put pressure on countries to agree to it.
For instance - it makes it clear to countries such as El Salvador that voting in Left Wing Governments could have a detrimental effect on the Salvadorans living in the USA and therefore they could send no money back to their families.

Secondly, It has a huge amount of military power much more than the UK

Thirdly because it is so powerful it does not have to "bully" countries it has a certain amount of hegemony and many countries acutally try to align themselves or model themselves on the US. -GOvernance by consent.

Uk is not completely weak but - for instance it is unlikely to wage war by itself (although it might go to war as part of the EU)
It has a fairly big economy, a lot of immigration and internatinal trade which gives it some influence.

A more interesting question would be the US v European Union or China.

I think they make a marvelous duo. At least Blair has some intestinal fortitude to assist Bush. Don't forget Australia, even Canada.

Both of them understand the dangers involved, as did the Clinton administration as far back as 1998. Many references to Saddam then by Clinton, Kerry, Kennedy.. unfortunately, all that changed only because Bush came into office and did what they were unable to do. But the plans were the same by the dems and Bush.. Wonder why they changed since 1998???

Seeing this question is in the politics section, I'm assuming you want an answer with reference to 21st century politics.

I'd have to say that the American government is more influential, and in the negative way. It all started going wrong when Bush Jr came to office. USA's had better republican presidents. They've also had better conservative presidents. In my opinion Bush Sr. was a better president than this dolt.

He first used 9/11 as an excuse to run after the oil in the Middle East (First Afghanistan, then Iraq, Israel/Palestine, what's next -- Iran?). He's distorted the political view of Islam and is advertising a dark and false perception of Islam. He's the one who gave birth to Islamist "extremists" and he breeds them because of the above mentioned point. His office claims to be fighting terrorism but implements policies which encourage otherwise. And there's his slow reaction to Hurrican Katrina.

The last time I checked the US still had unemployment, drugs, murder and immigration issues, and they still find time to ***** and moan to the rest of the world.

I'm sorry, I'm on an anti-Bush tirade. If you'd like more you could visit this website on Ahmadinejad’s (Iranian president) letter to Bush: http://www.cnn.com/interactive/world/0605/transcript.lemonde.letter/lemonde.8.html

Are we talking about now are in the grand scheme of history?

Considering we were a Brittish colony that founded our society and laws based on Brittish precedent and philosophers, then I'd have to say that America and everything it does is an offshoot of Brittish influence.

Add in the way they influenced Canada, India, Australia and others, and you will see that in a way, the Brittish Empire lives on.

What language am I, an American, writing this in?

The 19th century belonged to Great Britain.
The 20th century belonged to the United States.
I've heard (and I hope that will not be the case) that the 21st century will belong to China.
