Australian and British the same? Lol. I am Australian, and I think that British have an ever stronger accent than Americans. I went to America last year, and people could barely understand us, which was really strange because we were speaking English. I'm really not sure, but am curious to see the answers :).

I can say I'm cross between the two cultures. Americans think that Australians are very decent, smart, and some might think the girls are hot. ( look at Holly Valance) but most of all they love their accent.
However, I'm sad to say that Australians do not thing so highly of Americans tho.. They think Americans are stupid and are living in a material world where everything is controlled by the media (now, im starting to wonder why isn't Rupert Murdoch American?)
I feel offended when my Australian friend insult my American accent and their constant insult about how stupid Americans are. :(

To sweetness (and her not-so-sweet comment)
"Aborigines" is a generic term used to describe any native.
The correct, respectful term is "Aboriginal Australian" or "Indigenous Australian".
"Stealing the land" is a terrible part of our history and was mostly carried out by the "first settlers" (ie - English) although atrocities against Aboriginal Australians continued for many many years.
Currently, native title legislation does allow for Aboriginal Australians to reclaim ownership of their land - not that simply, but allowances are being made.
More respect is being given to the preservation of sacred Dreamtime sites, and in schools children learn more of the country's Indigenous heritage.
So in many ways we are trying to right a wrong, but still with a long way to go.
My annoyance is with the ignorance of foreigners who assume they know everything of our country and its history and mouth off accordingly.
Learn all the facts before contributing, lest you appear ignorant.

I'm a Yank who married an Aussie. Personally I think you guys are lots of fun.
But to be honest, we normally don't think of you. We are a little on the self-absorbed side. When we do think of Australians, we tend to think in stereotypes.
Good natured, easy-going, rowdy macho blokes, that sort of thing.
At least the stereotypes aren't negative!
Sweetness seems to forget what we did to the Native Americans.

That's called colonial jealousy. From my experience, many Anglo country's citizens ***** and whine about the US...but it is rarely reversed. So many people have an ideal of the US from the news. Like how "bad" our schools are and the fact there is capital punishment. Their sole source of information is the media. It is pathetic really. The only Anglo country that knows the truth is Canada, and they still complain. It's jealousy.
