It's a carburated '89 corolla. Only things left that I can think of are either blown head gasket, or replacement of air filter.. It smells bad but not as bad as before the oil change. What do you guys think?

It's not your head gasket. It could be your air cleaner air filter coming from the PCV valve, or the PCV valve itself. Change both. Check your spark plugs for oil build up. And take the thing out for a high speed drive. If all you do is drive around town, you get carbon built up in the valves and other parts. Don't junk the car, it's probably ok for another 10,000 miles at least. Just make sure the oil is at the "full" mark on the dipstick. I think you got another couple years left. Wait until problem gets really serious, and then you junk it. Right now, it is not serious. But perhaps it would be a good time to begin to look around.

If you're a reasonably good mechanic, buy used. If not, lease.

If you overheated the car, it is probably your head gasket. Check the radiator for oil contamination and also check the engine oil for water contamination. The oil usually changes to a chocolate color. If the smoke is black it is just your carburator.

Bad rings or valve seals. Either way, that engine is toast.

your piston rings are cooked or your valve guide seals are bad, either way its a major job to fix, i would suggest a complete overhaul
