What makes an asteroid, I honestly don't know. From what I have been able to gather, when a star goes supernova and explodes, asteroids are created as they are bits and pieces of a star that are then sent through space. As if it hit London, it would most likely be like 1 million Nuclear Warheads exploding all of the world at the same time. Basically, everything would be destroyed - plants, animals, humans, bacteria, etc covering the ENTIRE planet with dust for millions of years before it settled and the suns rays could penetrate it again.

Apparently the Chicxulub (Yucatan) asteroid was 10 km across and made a 180 km crater. A 1 km asteroid would have 1/1000 of the energy, and a 6 km crater would have 1/000 of the area, so that's my guess (plus total devastation for hundreds of miles around, of course).
Craters are basically hemispherical, so a 180 km one must have punched right through to the mantle, but a 6 km one could never be that deep. And the mantle is so viscous that the idea of it spewing out through the hole is pure fantasy anyway.

A 1 km asteroid hitting London would punch a hole through the crust of the earth and vaporized rock and magma would blast out for about 2000 miles in all directions. So, I guess you would say that London would be toast. Not to mention all of Europe west of Moscow.
Asteroids strike earth at 10,000s of km/hr speed. Even a little one a few meters wide would wreck a city.
