The Aquariums of Pyongyang by Kang Chol-hwan
Its a true story written by a boy who was imprisoned in the North Korean concentration camps at age 9. It's all about the life there and the utter hardships he and his family went through and his eventual escape to South Korea.
It is really a horrific story but definitely worth reading. Its hard to imagine that such a place actually still exists or ever did exist.

I'll be looking out for The Kite Runner. The book I've been recommending is Joy Dettman, Henry's Daughter. I don't think it's the best book ever written (although it is very good), I found in reading it, that it evoked some strong feelings and I loved the end, even though there were some parts through the book that made me so disturbed and sad that I wasn't sure I wanted to finish it. Malawindy by the same author is also a very good read.

The Kite Runner all the way- one of the most powerful books I've ever read. I can't get through the last third without at least a couple tears.

My must-read book is Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. The story hits home so hard that it's excruciating. I have to say, though, you'll either love this or hate it. No in-betweens.
Prep is about a girl attending boarding school and how she tries to live her life by the choices she makes while she's there. Simple plot but excellent writing.
