Well, the Bible is a great book to read. It's got a whole bunch of stuff on life and death, the relationship between men and women, the creation of societies and laws, a whole bunch of unique philosophical concepts, etc...
So if your question is can you recommend a great book to read? The Bible certainly qualifies. I can understand your frustration at someone who tells you it's the ONLY book you should EVER read, however. But don't hate the book just because of a whole bunch of fanatical critics.
I also enjoy the works of Pablo Neruda and Dostoevsky, among others. Cheers!
P.S. I also remember a Latin proverb that went: 'Beware the man of one book.'

As a Christain I can understand the other Christains telling you guys to read the Bible, but telling you that not reading it would ensue eternal condemnation in the fiery abyss?
That's just ridiculous. Only through Jesus Christ and GOD'S abritrament can you go to Heaven or go to Hell. Reading or not reading the Bible is completely up to you guys. It has nothing to do with those Christains. Besides, I just started reading the Bible just a couple of months ago and I still have faith in God.
Aside from the Bible, try reading "Ivanhoe". Its a pretty distinctive novel.

Look, you post questions online - you get what you get. If you only want a fiction book, put that in the question. I mean, there are really good books that aren't fiction! (Like biographies) Then, most likely, you won't get too many folks pushing the Bible at you - the ones who answer that wouldn't want it posted at fiction, right?
I'm not Christian, but there are parts of it that are a good read. It has been referred to as an excellent book - not just religious doctrine. (I haven't read the whole thing - doubt I ever will - doesn't mean it isn't interesting.)

I recommend a lot of good books to read... anything by gabriel garcia marquez, ayn rand, anne rice... but nothing still beats reading The Bible. You can try to escape from religion all you want but it'll keep coming back to bite you in the ***.

Amen to that! Haven't those people ever heard of editing done by Constantine and the other rulers? Or how about what is lost in translation? And, for all we know the prophets could have gone out and eaten some bad mushrooms in the wilderness and then received their 'vision from God'.

Human beings are compelled to adopt a belief system: some paradigm to provide meaning, purpose, and understanding to our lives. A quick survey of the world shows that pretty much any idea will do – it need not reflect reality or truth, merely function to fascinate, distract, and compel. We are designed for belief, not for truth.

Um, maybe because it's TRUE? And lasted for thousands of years. And is the bestselling book of all time?
Plus, if it's fiction, why are there so many historical artifacts being uncovered?
