In a word, the sweeping crippling threat prevalent in our society today is apathy. The exorbitantly wealthy and politically empowered put high stakes odds that society will be "kept in line" to their favor by apathy. And so far, they are right: It's so easy for us to throw up our hands and concede "Why fight these corrupt people? Hey: we were stupid for putting him or her in office--now we have NO choice but to eat their crap."

The largest fear the empowered have is to wake up and see society band together en masse and voice out opposition to corrupting political policies. Their number one biggest fear is an organized effort by their own constituents for a recall from office; something by the way is NOT all that hard to file legally and make happen.

For the wealthy, they are scared to see organized boycotts against purchase of their products and/or services. And it doesn't help if the press catch wind of the public's opposive stand, either.

Personally, I think Government apathy in the US was born when that assassin's fatal shot rang out on November 1963 and the world saw JFK get hit mafia/CIA style.
