Pros and cons of each?

Yeah, you are unhappy. By the way the horse won a competition the week before I bought her. She is perfect for my 7 y/o. Munching grass in the backyard now.

Whoops, you got some poop on your shoe.

The con on both is that the feed costs more than the horse is worth.

Well Pellets are easier for a old horse at that age to eat. I would know I have a 24 year old in good condition that I still show. I have her on the Buckeye senior feed which is pelleted. It has supplements in it that helps with older horses. So I say pelleted feed over Sweet Feed.

Well, some horses don't like pellets for some reason but all love sweet feed.
Too much sweet feed will however result in founder or colic.
Pellets are a balance of all nutrients.
Sweet feed (if you just buy 1 type eg. lucerne chaff) will not give the horse all nutrients.
So you should consider all this stuff. Maybe you would also like to chat to your Vet or retailer of horse feed.

12% is 12%! However, we have had a couple of instances of horses choking on pellets. I talked to our vet and he said he had treated quite a few horses who had choked on pellets. One died before he got there and another one died after being treated because the owners did not call quick enough. As I understand it, since horses cannot vomit, if during coughing when choking, if the matter goes up and comes out their nostrils, this can cause the lining to become irritated and infected if not treated immediately. So, in that case, the horse actually dies from the infection that sets in. Check with your vet on the issue.

A horse this age should really eat for the most part crimped oats. The other you mentioned are good to ad to it a few times a week but crimped oats will work wonders on your horse. My friends had one who lived for 36 yrs.
