If you earn income in the United States of America it is. I amnot sur eof when it starts but it was anything above 500 dollars is taxible as for as ss is concerned.
The reason is for the same reason California requires you to use a hlemet on a motorcycle. Ther are so many motor cycle accident sin california with so many head injuries to people with out money or insurance that California was forced to require them to carry insurance and wear helmets as the state usually ha dot pick up the medical tab.
likewise there are so many people who would have no retirement or money without Social Security that the country could not handle the welfare load of so many people unable to work due to age of sickness or accidents.
We are (as the world is) are an aging society and as most people will not or can not not save money for retirement or emergencies the government must require it.

I am not a tax man, but Yes, it is mandatory - as long as you make over $600.00 a year. If you are in business for yourself, you will still have to pay it on your income tax - self-employment tax, and it will be much higher than if you worked for someone else.
You must of course, get a social security number from the local social security office if you move her from somewhere else.

Social secure practices won't purely disappear. The gov't has innovations. it could supplement the payouts with ordinary tax money. it could print extra funds, etc. whether the gov't does not do a damn element, SS will nonetheless take up sufficient payroll taxes to pay out around 70% of what it would. that is going to be there for you, purely perhaps no longer as much as you was hoping. Dredude52's answer is risky. there is no longer something voluntary approximately SS or earnings taxes, different than you may decide for to no longer settle for SS reward. How the does gov't be attentive to no count if I signed the back of my SS card? the only voluntary element approximately earnings taxes, is which you voluntarily examine your self by ability of making waiting and submitting a return. in case you do no longer, the gov't will do it for you, yet they gained't be doing you any favors like finding the deductions and credit. Paying earnings taxes is by ability of no ability voluntary!!! Idiots who do no longer pay their earnings taxes have their factors seized or land up in detention center, or the two. SS is purely yet another gov't application. They tax your earnings and then they redistribute it by a application referred to as SS to the previous individuals and disabled. Congress and the President can substitute or abolish this application at any time, purely like all different application.

It is mandatory if you are working a job. Even if you have your own business, you still have to pay into social security.
