It's my first time teaching children and i need some advice.
What are some good ways to help children memorize bible verses?
And how do you deal with troublesome/rebellious kids? I know children don't respond well to force or threats, so how do i get them to listen?

Use pictures... Engage them through pictures.
Remember lil' kids only have 2 minutes attention spans at most...
You better be moving quickly if you want to get their attention.

Bring with you multiple pictures... as you go on with your story, present them with new picture...
Again no more than 2 minutes per picture...

You did not state how old, but typically

Spend the first few minutes doing something that will expend energy - sing - dance - praise music. The praise music will help with the scriptures like "this is the day the Lord has made we will rejoice we will rejoice we will rejoice and be glad in it" There is also another song about the fruit of the spirit which represents Galations.

Honestly never had real troublesome rebellious kids in Bible Class - typically if they are there their parents are more involved in their lives and the discipline factor takes care of a hour class.

Get them to listen by leading, showing, encouraging - having things for them to do and try. Also by doing this there is no force or threats.

Choose sorter versus so it's easier for them to remember. Try getting some curriculum specifically for the age you will be teaching. I taught 4 year olds for a while and the troublesome ones were the ones who most needed patience and understanding. Try to just stay calm and positive, they will eventually get that the negative attention they want isn't gonna happen. If they are really out of hand try asking a "veteran" at the church or the person running that ministry, they should have some helpful suggestions.

Repetition on the bible verses, usually in a song, game, or puzzle format.
Try to ignore the rebellious behavior, and reward the good behavior in front of the naughty kids...they are watching. Immediately when they do something good, offer them praise.

To memorize verses, play games with them. Let each one say one word of the verse, then go faster and faster. Or, say the verse, and cover one word, then say it again, and repeat. Set the verse to music. As for rebellious kids, try speaking with them quietly and privately, explaining that you need their help. Try to use them to assist you in the activity. It wont always work, but sometimes it can help them feel important and satisfy the need for attention. Good luck and God bless.

Get children to remember bible verses through game, make it into a song, and use challenges pitting one group against another.

With troublesome kids, get them to become involved, e.g. holding the placard, giving out stuff, acting a role in your story.

Hope this helps :-)
