The auto zone and a mechanic at a gas station, both verified that it is the oxygen sensor. Do I need to replace that right away, or can I just drive it and wait. And what does that sensor do to the car?

I think it has to do with emissions. You are polluting the air more than you are supposed to be. You also won't be getting very good fuel economy. Don't sweat it to much.

It is one heck of a lot cheaper to replace it than it AND your cat converter so don't wait too long. A 2002 shouldn't be too hard to change as it is not really that old yet, but do go back to your Auto Zone and rent the correct tool for it, don't even think of using anything else (knew a guy who tried to use vise grips and trashed his engine) to change it. Saturate the heck out of it with something like PB blaster ( get at A/Z) first, to help un-seize it.

I had the same car and they had a recall on a mechanism in the computer system for the oygen sensor , you can look that up on the internet and then call your local dealership, they should still replace it for free.

Replace it now.

It will not get any better, and it will get worse, and hurt your rings and valves and cylinders. And you will soon have trouble driving the first mile or so.
