how old does a mouse have to be to breed?

As soon as mice are physically mature 35-55 days, young can be produced. It is better to wait a few more weeks to breed females though or they eat the first few litters and the litters are small and unhealthy. I have been breeding mice-mostly for color variations for over 13 years. Mice can have 12-18 young and they will not nurse the young of another mouse if there is a male in the cage.

Females are sexually mature at 6 weeks and males at 8 weeks. They can be weaned at 3 or 4 weeks old so separate them at 4-5 weeks at the latest to avoid another litter.
