i think it was his high school jersey number or something and one thing u misspell number and kobe rocks!!!!! <3 the lakers

he answered this question after one of their games near the end of the season...he said something down the lines that it represented hard work basically 24/7 365 days a year. So, he's basically doing it to represent his work ethic, which is widly known as one of the best in the league and also, I think it was his dads older jersey in Italy.

Plus, maybe just maybe...he's trying to 1 up #23?

Edit: To the guy above me that said his highschool # was 24 you're wrong it was #33.

Because it is a marketing thing. His number 8 jersey was the number one selling jersey until his legal problems.

By changing his number fans will want to purchase the new one.
