On Friday, I overheard one of my coworkers telling some other people some things about me- she was mad about something that I had said to her- I am over my department and asked her to do a simple thing and she refused to do it. Some really terrible things were said and I heard all of them- some of the things were very hurtful and untrue- in fact, they damage my reputation in the office. I have seniority over her and I know that my boss would stick up for me and would reprimand her if I told her but I do not want to cause problems in the office. Do I say something or do I keep my mouth shut?

If I were you, I would let my boss know and leave it up to her/him to solve it. You deserve better treatment than that.

Keep your mouth shut; let your reputation speak for itself. If your boss would take your side anyway, you have nothing to worry about. The only person you should be concerned with is yourself and perhaps your superiors. Everything else is office squabble. Don't compound the problem by "telling."

Try the "kill her with kindness" technique. Make everyone realize that what was said was untrue, and it will make the perpetrator of the rumors look like an asssss.

You sound a good kid and you do not need this.
I think that you should approach her and let her know that you overheard the lies that she had
told the other staff, ensuring, at least a couple of the other workers overhear you,at the end add, do you know you can be accused of slander, so if you or anyone is heard to be repeating these lies then I definately will be approaching my boss.So think yourself lucky that I am taking this course of action.
If you think this to be too harsh ok. but you must stop it somehow be it go to the boss or whatever, you have got to show her who is boss
Good luck Lili

I would say something, call a meeting with your boss and the lady and clear things up or if she is not a worthy employee recommend she be let go, if you are a leader putting up with that stuff makes you look bad and then the other employees will see that they too can run all over you

Hey Lil, its better to discuss & solve the problem with your coworker, as it may be happen becoz of some kind of misunderstanding or wrong communication, so just talk to her & ask the reason why she is upset, its better not to take the issue to your boss. Ok all the best !

You've already got problems in the office. The question is do you want them to be your problems or her problems? Do you want this to repeat in the future every time you ask this woman to do something or do you want her to understand that she needs to just do it?

give that gossiper more work than usual.be very sweet but strict. tell her to do overtime and give her more work. this will teach her to keep her mouth shut.and if she refuses to work then make a formal complaint against her.
