we are in debate about bedtimes now that the kids are getting older. the 14 year old boy wants to set his own bedtime during his weekend stays. the 12 year old girl thinks she deserves the same privildges that he does because shes just as mature. the kids are capable of being quiet after we go to bed. but i caught them up at 3:30 a.m one morning. they were just sitting in one of the rooms playing video games. they are not the reason i woke up. yep that chosen nephew was right in there with them lol. so what should i do? any suggestions?

I'd say 10-10:30 for the 12 year old and 11:30-12:00 for the 14 year old...trust me...teenagers do NOT want to go to bed.

my 12 and 14 year old have a 9:30 bedtime during the week for school. The rule is 9:00 bed then I allow them a half hour of TV time, reading , game playing or whatever they want to do quietly then lights out. On the weekends I am a little more flexible bed time no later then midnight but they have to be in their rooms for quiet time by 11:00 for Friday and Saturday. Sunday is the same as school nights.

Weekdays, around 10:30 for the 12 year old and 11:30 for the 14 year old. Weekends, whenever they want.

Mt 12 yr old son goes to bed at 10 pm on school nights and always no later then midnight on weekends my 8 year old daughter is 8 pm school nights and usually10 or 11 weekends allowing a child that young to stay up all night isn't good for them even if they are good kids and don't bother anyone or anything when they are up.

I think 9pm on school nights & 10pm on weekends is a good time. Since they are close in age & girls are more mature than boys, they both could have the same bedtime. At their bedtime they should go to their rooms & you should make access to the video game unavailable when it's time for bed.

the reason why they are up at 3am is because their sleep pattern is still adjusting. chemicals in body (adredeline) just will not cooperate for kids to be sleepy. its so common and innocent. I agree that 9pm weekdays and 10pm weekends is fair. now we have to think of how can we tire them out and unwind 2 hours before bedtime. I strongly suggest sharing a nice soothing totaly relaxing bubblebath with them. The hot water will definately calm them down. its also the perfect age to have the talk. Secondly reading a boring bedtime story always works. so good luck.

I agree with 10:00 for the 12 year old and maybe 10:30-11 on the weekend for the 14 year old. To break that pattern- get em up at the crack of dawn with chores.

my daughter is 14 and her bed time for the weekend is 1 am no later but during the week she is in bed by 10:30 period. and this has been the rule since she was 12 except during the week when bed time was 9:30. Be firm but nice about it they will respect you more.

Let them make they're own bedtimes. Just put stipulations and rules down such as they have to up at a certain hour. attitude from lack of sleep shouldn't be tolerated. No afternoon naps. Eventually they will go to bed at a decent hour. It may take a week or two but they'll fall in to a rhythm
