You mean monolingual, as in us Americans? Yes, I do believe we Americans are limited not only because of our lack of fluency in other languages, but also because of our lack of general interest in, and knowledge of and respect for, other cultures. Thank you for asking!

We are limited in our ability to communicate with people who do not speak English. I think some of us just don't have the ability to become fluent in another language. I studied German for 3 years and Spanish for 4 getting straight As but I can't construct a simple sentence any more. I do a little better with sign language but I still have a limited vocabulary and use English grammar rather than true ASL. My IQ is supposedly genious level and I communicate OK in English but I just can't get anywhere learning languages.

In Europe, people can drive for 20 minutes and be in a different country that speaks another language. Europeans are practically forced to learn other languages. I live in the U.S. and except for immigrants, we all speak English. Does that make those of us isolated from non-English speaking people limited or retarded? No, it does not.

I speak English, German, French and Spanish. I can only assume from your question that you are bilingual. Being monolingual makes no one less smart than a bilingual person such as yourself, and I know. After all, my being multi-lingual should make me at least twice as smart as you otherwise, and only ignorant people are arrogant enough to see themselves as better than most other folks.
