I mean, please don't think I am being stupid,or ignorant,ok? When we told ppl we were moving to the South, they told us that inbred ppl lived all around. That made me think of a zombie movie but I have not seen or heard of any inbred ppl since I moved here. It is just another one of those urban myths about the South? I know from watching a movie called "Wrong Turn" that there are rumored to be some here, but I,myself have not seen any. And the episode from the X Files, called "Home" and it was really controversial. Is it true? i live in Va. and have not heard that rumor about those type of ppl living here.

Now that we know inbreeding causes genetic problems most countries regulate marriage to close relatives. But there are still parts of the world where there are no legal restrictions or they are not enforced.

More than likely there were parts of the South, particularly mountainous areas like the Ozarks, where there probably was some inbreeding. Small, isolated communities where the population was also poor and largely uneducated. Like the communities portrayed in the movie "Deliverance".

Inbreeding does not necessarily produce freaks and idiots, but certainly it gives rise to some cases.

A good historical example was provided by the royal families of Europe, where there was a lot of inter-marriage in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This is offered as an explanation for the haemophilia (uncontrolled bleeding) gene in the families of Queen Victoria and Tsar Nicholas II.

Well, there are people who are inbred though I feel that this is something that does not occur as much as it used to and when it did it was due to living in isolated areas with a very small population. This severely limits the gene pool and as a result produced people who were inbred.

Ever since science has discovered that the breeding of people with similar DNA produces a greater chance for retardation, steps have been taken to eliminate, or at least minimize the possibilities of this happening in this day and age.

Unfortunately inbreds do exist, especially in low populated poor rural areas. I can think of 2 families in this area where we live . It occurs because of incest of course and may occur from generation to generation. The IQ of each new generation gets lower and lower and the occurrence of genetic disorders doubles. Strangers usually don't know anything about it and a person has to live in an area for a very long time, get to know the locals and blend in to find out this kind of information. People who live like this, generally have no electricity, cannot read or write, do not send their children to school and one family member goes occasionally to the store to make purchases. These people live by the gun and will not even accept clothing or food from anyone. It is hard to believe this occurs in this day and age but there are still areas of the U.S. that are relatively unchanged. A lot of domestic violence and child molestation and child abuse also occurs in these families because the members are seen as possessions.

Yes, there are inbred people in the world. However, don't expect them to look like the monsters in Wrong Turn. Not all inbred people look different and some of them don't even act that different depending on how close the parents' genes are. But yes, there are indeed inbred idiots and for some reason, many of them are in the south (and in other countries).

Yes, inbreds truly exist. As far as the south goes, I believe they are really stereotyped. I'm sure there are plenty of them there, but really, they are everywhere. They don't all migrate south.
