It is possibly a kettlebell. Used for working out. Just do a yahoo image search on "kettlebell" and see if the pics look like it.

Small boats use simple weight as an anchor. No need to hook anything down below cuz you're not sleeping or anything. Think small fishing boat. Of couse, it could always be some crazy old farm thing too. Or maybe an old leg iron like the prisoners in cartoons wear.

Something big is no cannon ball of any kind! It could be a homemade anchor but I doubt it what it sounds like (hard with no picture) is the weight used for the descend/assent line for the old fashion diving helmets. The line had to be absolutely vertical so the diver did not wind up tipping over and losing air in helmet!

Anchors for any boat is not round. If you think the ball has been used in a nautical way its probably a "Sentinel" which is run down the anchor line with a second line attatched so you can haul it back up before pulling the anchor. Its run down the main anchor line to keep the main anchor line as horizontal as possible thus creating a better pull on the anchor itself especially in rough weather.

Quite often they are more like a long cylinder, about 3 to 4 feet long and about 3 to 4 inches in diameter and your "handle" on the top is more "ring" shaped. Many are home made by pouring cement in to a length of pipe and sticking an "eye" (from a "hook and eye" type of thing) in to the wet cement at the top.

If it is really round, it could be a retrievable cannon ball, you tie a rope on the handle and ........
