I've owned my Dell Inspiron 9300 for a year and a half and the computer runs perfectly fine. However, the AC Adapter for it seems to be on its last legs--the cable that runs between my laptop and the adapter is "yanking out" on the adapter side (with over two inches of bare wire being visible) and I've currently got it patched together with electrical tape. Is it possible to fix the cable by myself, and if so how? If not, what are my options aside from buying a new one from Dell?

To answer your questions directly... YES, it is possible to fix the cable by yourself but it requires some skills on soldering (electronics). if you can, open the AC adapter (by unscrewing or by any means but be careful not to damage the integral electronic parts)... locate the two wires of the cable connecting to the circuit board.. you can either solder with a new electrical cable or just repair it with soldering only the bad part.
if this is too risky for you or you don't have the experience yet.. just try to call an electronics guy or probably an engineer, even 1st year college electronics students would be able to do it. this is a lot cheaper than buying a new one (if the problem is only the cables and not the electronics in it)

I have the inspiron 9300 as well, randomly my adapter just stopped working and just made a beeping sound. The dell site charges something like $60 for a new one. My computer was still covered under warranty and they had one to me the next day for free. Go to the dell site and click service then warranty information and type in the service code located on the bottom of the comp. It will tell you if you are still covered, if you are send them an email and they will get back to you right away. I would suggest saying it just stopped working rather then visible wires which may be considered your fault and not covered. Also staples sells some universal adapters by targon which may be a little more expensive but it is another option for you.

it is possible however its not for the beginers if you attempt this fix you will need a soldering iron and some solder (can be found at radio shak the best option instead of buying one from dell buy a universal notebook ac adapter from somewhere like comp usa or newegg.com ussaully about 50 dollars us at newegg and it will have all of the plug adapters to fit to your notebook ,or you can e-bay it but you never know what youre getting there .

Ther best bet is to buy a new one. Dell has free shipping, so if you order it online, it may not take too long. If it's currently working with electrical tape that's good, but it can go anytime.
You may be able to find one faster at your local electronics store

If you know how to solder and can actually get the adapter casing apart (as they are glued together) you can unsolder the bad end cut the wire a little shorter and re-solder the cable in.

Buy a new one is better than repair it. Repair requires longer time than buying a new one.
