I've never smoked and wondered why people do it. Does it give you a buzz somehow?

I think they all start for similar reasons - they wanna be cool,
be like all their other friends, and fit in. Or in the case of women (mostly) - they start because they've heard rumours that it will help them lose weight and stay slim - whenever they feel the urge to eat, have a smoke instead. It's all just stupidity really. Why would somebody choose to smell that bad on purpose? - it's a total trap. I'm glad I never started. :-)

"Hey Oooooops_all_berries, there's no question. They feel a slight buzz from the nicotine. They attempt to acquire a continuous buzz by repeating the steps of taking a puff. Since it's still legal and gives a buzz, the habit is hard to break.
Of course, if you want to get deeper into this phenomena, most smokers are suicidal. Why? It has been proven, without a shadow of doubt, that smoking kills, causes cancer and a myriad of other things. It's just plain foolish to continue with the habit of self-destruction, but, some people unconsciously have their needs whether real or imagined."

Three of the main reasons that young people smoke are to look mature, to be like their friends, and to experiment. Since teens see older people all around them smoking, especially their parents and relatives, they smoke to act older. If their friends or peers smoke, they may feel pressured into doing the same to be accepted. The last reason is the excitement of experimenting with something that is forbidden. In Massachusetts it is against the law for anyone under 18 years old to smoke. Usually parents do not allow their under age teens to smoke. Therefore, smoking becomes very attractive. It is exciting to get cigarettes and sneak away to smoke without being caught.

Adults smoke for other reasons. They may have a lot of stress and pressures because of economic and personal problems. They may be unemployed or working but not making enough money to take care of themselves and their families. They may be homeless, or they may be dealing with alcohol or cocaine/heroin addictions. Some may be in bad marriages or relationships in which there is physical and/or verbal abuse. All these people may smoke to feel relaxed or to give them energy while going through a hard time.

Whether young or old, some people smoke to control their weight. Smokers, on the average, weigh seven pounds less than non-smokers. Smoking reduces a person's appetite. It lessens his/her sense of taste and smell. This could be why ex-smokers gain weight after quitting cigarettes. Food tastes and smells so much better.

Finally, there are people who say they love to smoke. Smoking gives them pleasure. It just makes them feel good.

when I started smoking I had just moved back after being gone for a year, I was in 7th. grade and all the "cool" girls smoked so to fit in and look "cool" I joined in, all in my family smoked, so no big deal right? Well now many years later I can't breath very deeply I know cigs make every thing smell bad and I've seen a couple people die from cigs yet their soo addictive, at work I choose to smoke than eat cause theirs no time to do both. Its crazy but its so hard to quit.

Nicotine found in tobacco is a very addictive drug. Stopping causes withdrawal symptoms. Those who smoke dream up all kinds of reasons why they stick to the habit.

Reasoning is nearly useless when someone's body is addicted, he/she would tend to rationalize or even ignore (at least for the moment) the warnings. So, never mind that nicotine, tar, and other tobacco components are carcinogenic and poisonous, and harms even more the people around you...Support tobacco companies who earn billions in making people drug addicts and cancer patients! Viva los cigarillos!

I think people get addicted to smoking cigarettes. Like my mom. I heard it gives you a buzz. I do not think smoking is a good idea because it can give you cancer or emph.

Smoking is dangerous to our health. This is government warning to all smokers.

I do also wonder why people smoke and asking what they gain. I think it cannot be resolved unless reproduction of cigar cease out for business.

there are several reasons, some smoke tobacco out of curiosity, some due to peer pressure, others just to get out of the rut, some, just to play it cool.

Yea, the nicotine causes the muscles to relax, ignore the people who say its pressure and crap like that. I picked it up because it gave me a buzz and made me relaxed.

tobacco has a very long and very rich history.....
do research on it.... you will be very surprised.

from the Turkish who used coffee and tobacco to relax,,,
(like we use wine and food today) to the Irish who smoked their pipes at the end of the day, they believe that smoke is paralleled with life itself (we burn hot and shine, then we drift away thru time)........

there is much much more to tobacco than being cool and fitting in,,,,, seriously, that's just ignorance to the facts and history of it all.
